Perched over the cliffs of the caldera with spectacular volcano views, Fira started developing in the 18th century with the resettlement of the population of Venetian fortress of Skaros, and became Santorini’s capital in the 19th century. Today, it’s Santorini’s largest town, dotted with picturesque chapels and cave houses. Among its noteworthy landmarks are two beautiful Cathedrals, the Megaro Gyzi Cultural Center, home year-round to a variety of interesting events, and the not-to-be-missed Archaeological Museum and the Prehistoric Thera Museum, both offering insights into Santorini’s ancient heritage.
