PREHISTORIC CITY OF AKROTIRI

The prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri, excavated by Professor Spyridon Marinatos starting in 1967, provides a remarkable window into an advanced Aegean civilization. Flourishing as a cosmopolitan harbor town during the Late Bronze Age, the city was perfectly preserved for posterity under a thick mantle of volcanic ash following a massive eruption in the 17th century BC.

Today, a modern bioclimatic shelter protects the 1.2-hectare archaeological site at the southern end of the island, allowing visitors to explore its impressive multi-story buildings and advanced sewage systems. While the site itself showcases the architectural brilliance of the settlement, the exquisite furniture, household equipment, and artifacts recovered from the ruins are elegantly showcased at the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira, offering a true taste of this highly cultured society.
