Located in Fira, the Museum of Prehistoric Thera is one of the most significant museums in Greece, showcasing masterpieces of Aegean prehistoric art. Among its most renowned exhibits are the famous wall paintings from Akrotiri and the unique gold ibex figurine.
The museum houses artifacts from excavations at Akrotiri, conducted by the Archaeological Society at Athens, as well as finds from earlier excavations at Potamos by the German Archaeological Institute and rescue excavations from various sites across Santorini, carried out by the 21st Ephorate of Antiquities.
The exhibition traces the history of Thera in prehistoric times, selecting key artifacts from thousands in storage to highlight its dynamic and creative development. By the 18th and 17th centuries BC, Akrotiri had emerged as one of the most significant centers in the Aegean world.
