Founded in 1956 by Captain Antonis Dakoronias, the Naval Maritime Museum of Oia preserves Santorini’s rich maritime heritage. Captain Dakoronias began collecting naval artifacts in 1951, and in 1990, the museum was relocated to a historic captain’s home, generously donated by Mrs. Dina Manosessou-Birbili.
The museum houses one of Greece’s most extensive maritime collections, featuring rare figureheads, mariners’ chests, naval equipment, models of traditional and modern ships owned by Santorinians, historical watercolors of old sailboats, archival photographs, and an extensive book collection.
A visit to the museum highlights the crucial role of Santorinian shipowners and captains in shaping Greek maritime history.
