ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

Located in the heart of Fira, near the cable car terminal, the Archaeological Museum of Thera offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s history, spanning from the Geometric period to Roman times. Its collections include sculptures, inscriptions, pottery artifacts, and clay figurines, reflecting the artistic and cultural evolution of ancient Thera.

Among the museum’s most significant exhibits are:

  • A Theraic jar with intricate geometric patterns from the early 7th century BC.
  • A massive volcanic rock (trachyte) weighing 480 kg.
  • Artifacts from the cemetery of Ancient Thera, including pottery, jars, and kouros statues.

The museum’s current building was constructed in 1960 to replace the original structure, which collapsed during the 1956 earthquake. Standing at the center of Santorini’s capital, it serves as a vital link to the island’s rich archaeological past.
