Getting to Santorini
Transportation
To reach Santorini by air, you can fly directly into Santorini (Thira) National Airport (JTR), which is the island’s main airport. During peak travel seasons, there are numerous direct flights from major European cities, including London, Paris, and Rome. If you’re traveling from other parts of the world, you’ll likely connect through Athens, Greece’s capital, which has frequent short flights to Santorini year-round. The flight from Athens to Santorini takes approximately 45 minutes, offering stunning aerial views of the Aegean Sea and the island’s iconic caldera as you approach.
You can reach Santorini by ferry from Piraeus Port (Athens), Rafina Port (Athens), and other major Aegean islands. High-speed ferries take approximately 4.5 to 5 hours from Piraeus, while conventional ferries take around 7 to 8 hours. There are also regular connections from Crete
(Heraklion), Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, and other Cycladic islands. Ferries arrive at Athinios Port, from where you can take a taxi, bus, or rental car to your destination on the island. It is recommended to book tickets in advance, especially during peak season.
Getting around the island
Transportation
Getting around Santorini using public transport is both convenient and affordable. The island is served by a reliable bus network operated by KTEL, with buses running regularly between major towns like Fira, Oia, Kamari, and Perissa. Fira, the island’s central hub, is where most bus routes start and end, making it easy to transfer to different parts of the island. During peak season, buses run more frequently, approximately every 30 minutes to an hour, and schedules are often posted at bus stops or available online. The buses are modern, air-conditioned, and inexpensive, with fares typically ranging from €1.80 to €2.50 depending on the route.
Renting a car in Santorini gives you the freedom to explore the island beyond the main tourist hubs, from the cliffside villages to hidden beaches. Rental agencies are available at Santorini National Airport (JTR), Athinios Port, and in major towns. While driving is straightforward, roads can be narrow, and parking in busy areas like Oia and Fira fills up quickly. Opting for a compact car or ATV can make navigating the island easier, especially in high season.
Taxis are available in Santorini but are limited in number, so wait times can be long, especially in peak season. You can find taxis at Santorini National Airport (JTR), Athinios Port, and central spots like Fira’s main square, or you can call for a pickup. Fares are fixed for common routes, but it’s best to confirm the price before your ride, as taxis do not use meters. For a more reliable option, consider booking a private transfer.
